Layered House is an interior design studio rooted in the belief that the most beautiful spaces are not built through excess — they’re composed with intention, memory, and a deep understanding of the life happening inside them.
We design interiors that feel personal, expressive, and lived in. Spaces shaped by story. Rooms layered over time. Homes that hold beauty and function in equal measure — and reflect the people who live there.
Brandy Hovie
FOUNDER
Much of my approach to design was shaped long before it became my work. My grandmother’s home was filled with art — paintings always present, handmade pieces woven into everyday life, and a rotating collection that made the space feel alive and deeply personal. Later, my mother-in-law’s instinct for legacy pieces and enduring beauty refined the way I see a home: not as something to fill, but as something to build slowly, with intention. Their influence is at the heart of Layered House — a belief that spaces should hold story, memory, and meaning, and that what surrounds us should feel as personal as it is beautiful.
Our Philosophy
We begin by honoring what already exists — the architecture of a home, the pieces that carry meaning, and the backdrop that gives a space its identity.
From there, we refine. We edit. We layer.
We believe there is enough on this planet, and that design does not require constant replacement to be impactful. Often, the most meaningful work comes from reconsidering what’s already present: reshaping a layout, rebuilding a beloved chair, reupholstering a flea market find, or bringing new life to a room through textiles, art, and one transformative piece.
Design should not feel disposable. It should feel lasting.
A Studio Approach
Layered House offers full-service interior design as well as standalone services, including bespoke furnishings, foundational layers (rugs, window treatments, and wall coverings), and art + antiques sourcing.
Whether we’re designing from the ground up or refining a lived-in home, we approach each project with the same care: proportion, material integrity, and the quiet details that make a space feel complete.
Material Integrity
We believe the health of the home is just as important as its beauty.
When designing bespoke furnishings and specifying key materials, we prioritize natural and organic options whenever possible — including considered textiles, responsible fills, and non-toxic foams and materials. Comfort should never come at the expense of well-being, and the pieces that surround you every day should feel as good as they look.
The Layered Edit
The Layered Edit is an extension of our studio work — a curated home edit collected over time. It’s a rotating selection of furnishings, textiles, art, antiques, and pieces for the home chosen for character, texture, and lasting presence.
Founder
Layered House was founded by an interior designer with a deep belief that the most beautiful spaces are built through meaning, not excess. With a love for color, texture, art, and one-of-a-kind pieces, the studio’s work is rooted in thoughtful layering — honoring what already exists, refining what matters, and creating interiors that feel deeply personal to the people who live there.
FOUNDER Q&A
What does “Layered House” mean to you?
A layered home feels collected, not decorated. It’s built slowly — through color, texture, memory, and pieces that hold meaning. It’s a space that reflects who you are, not what’s trending.
How would you describe your design style?
Refined, expressive, and deeply personal. I’m drawn to spaces that feel lived-in and intentional — where art, antiques, and one-of-a-kind pieces create warmth and story. I love color, pattern, and contrast, but always with balance.
What do you believe great design should do?
Great design should support your life. It should bring calm, inspiration, and ease — and it should feel like you. A home should hold beauty, but it should also hold meaning.
What’s one thing you wish more people understood about interior design?
That you don’t need to start over to make a space feel new. Often, the most impactful work comes from editing, refining, and reworking what already exists — not replacing everything.
What’s your favorite part of the process?
Sourcing. Finding the piece that makes the room click — the antique chair with the perfect silhouette, the art that pulls everything together, the fabric that brings warmth and softness. It’s the layer that makes the space feel complete.
You talk a lot about “reconsidering” what already exists — why is that important to you?
Because there’s already so much in the world. I love the challenge and creativity of working with what’s already present — a home’s architecture, a client’s existing pieces, or even a flea market find. With the right eye and the right materials, those pieces can be rebuilt, refined, and made beautiful again.
What’s one thing you’ll always prioritize?
Material integrity. The health of a home matters. I prefer natural materials and thoughtful construction whenever possible, and I’m especially mindful about what goes inside upholstered pieces — including healthier, non-toxic foams and fills.
What’s the feeling you want clients to have when they walk into a finished space?
Relief, calm, and a sense of being held by their environment — but also inspiration. I want clients to feel immediately that the space reflects their life: their memories, their story, their rhythm. A home should energize you as much as it comforts you. It should make you want to live your life in it — and when friends and family walk in, it should be unmistakably yours.
